Welcome Back Parents/Guardians and Students!!!!!!
My name is Ms. Jackson and I will be your fifth grade teacher for the 2014-2015 school year. Fifth grade is an exciting year and I am very happy to be working with you all this year. As of right now we are a small class with 17 students but that can change at anytime throughout the school year. This is my tenth year of teaching in the Colonial School District and I have taught two of those years at Pleasantville Elementary School. Before I taught at Pleasantville, I was a teacher at Castle Hills Elementary School and William Penn High School.
Fifth grade is a critical year of elementary school because it is the last year before moving on to middle school. This is the year where we prepare students academically as well as socially with skills to help your student be successful in fifth grade and beyond. Students are expected to come to school on time, every day and to be ready to learn. There will be homework Monday through Thursday in Reading and Math as well as some other subjects. On Friday, weekly Friday Reports will be given to keep you informed about your student’s progress for that week or the previous week. The Friday Report will have messages to you about important dates and events at school as well as how your student is doing with their behavior, academics in subjects being taught that week and their homework. This is given on Fridays and is expected to be signed and returned by Monday. It is critical to return this on Monday because it lets me as a teacher know that I have communicated with you about what is going on with your child. If at anytime, this report is ever lost throughout the weekend, you may send me a note or an email stating you saw the Friday Report for that week.
We will also practice staying organized throughout the school year. Your child will be given a 2-inch binder with 5 dividers labeled Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies. Worksheets, notes and other important papers will be put into the binder daily. We will work together as a class to make sure our papers are put in the right places so that at any time if a student needs to find their papers, they will be in there instead of multiple folders. Your student will also be given a spiral notebook as well as a composition book to use throughout the year. I have provided these things at the beginning of the year and ask that if your child needs a new one throughout the year, that you please replace it for them. Soft pencil cases are easier to store in desks so if you could please get that for your child, that would be great. You can even get them a case to put in their binder which would probably work even better for them. It is not required for you to purchase these items but may be helpful to your child if they would like to bring their own pencils, pens, crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue and/or scissors. I do provide basic supply needs for your child but I always welcome donations from you if you would like to give to our classroom.
I am excited to work with you all this year!!!! If you ever need to contact me, you can reach me by phone at (302) 323-2935 ext. 1006 or by email at [email protected]. You can send a note to me as well and I will respond as soon as possible. Let’s have a great and successful school year. Look forward to meeting you at Open House on Monday, September 15th from 6:00-8:00 pm.
Sincerely,
Ms. Jackson
