Welcome Back Parents/Guardians and Students!!!!!!
My name is Ms. Jackson and I will be your fifth grade teacher for the 2015-2016 school year. Fifth grade is an exciting year and I am very happy to be working with you all this year. As of right now we are a small class with 18 students but that can change at anytime throughout the school year. This is my eleventh year of teaching in the Colonial School District and I have taught three of those years at Pleasantville Elementary School. Before I taught at Pleasantville, I was a teacher at Castle Hills Elementary School and William Penn High School.
Fifth grade is a critical year of elementary school because it is the last year before moving on to middle school. This is the year where we prepare students academically as well as socially with skills to help your student be successful in fifth grade and beyond. Students are expected to come to school on time, every day and to be ready to learn. The school day starts at 8:19 am and ends at 3:19 pm. There was a mistake on the original schedule and I want to make sure you have the correct time for your child. There will be homework Monday through Thursday in Math as well as some other subjects. This year, your child will have two teachers. They will have myself for Math and Social Studies and Ms. Harrington for Reading and Science. Ms. Harrington and I work as a team so any information that we need to know about your child should be passed on to both of us. On Friday, weekly Friday Reports will be given to keep you informed about your student’s progress for that week or the previous week. The Friday Report will have messages to you about important dates and events at school as well as how your student is doing with their behavior, academics in subjects being taught that week and their homework. This is given on Fridays and is expected to be signed and returned by Monday. It is critical to return this on Monday because it lets me as a teacher know that I have communicated with you about what is going on with your child. If at anytime, this report is ever lost throughout the weekend, you may send me a note or an email stating you saw the Friday Report for that week.
We will also practice staying organized throughout the school year. Your child will be given folders for Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. If you would like your student to use a binder to become organized then that is welcomed as well. Worksheets, notes and other important papers will be put into the folders daily. We will work together as a class to make sure our papers are put in the right places so that at any time if a student needs to find their papers, they will be in there. Your student will also be given a spiral notebook as well as a composition book to use throughout the year which I have provided these things at the beginning of the year. Soft pencil cases are easier to store in desks so if you choose to get your child a pencil case, could you please get that type of case for your child. I do provide basic supply needs for your child but I always welcome donations from you if you would like to give to our classroom.
I am excited to work with you all this year!!!! If you ever need to contact me, you can reach me by phone at (302) 323-2935 ext. 1006 or by email at [email protected]. You can send a note to me as well and I will respond as soon as possible. Let’s have a great and successful school year. Look forward to meeting you at Open House on Monday, September 21st from 6:00-8:00 pm.
Sincerely,
Ms. Jackson
